Mirena (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system).
Mirena contains 52 mg of levonorgestrel. Initially,levonorgestrel is released at a rate of approximately 20 mcg/day. This rate decreases progressively to half that value after 5 years.

My Mom was suffering from Menometrorrhagia, on investigation simple hyperplasia without atypia was diagnosed with 18 mm of endometrial thickness. Dr. Mohi ( gynaecologist ) from Rajindra Hospital Patiala advised us to get Mirena inserted because of better outcome and hysterectomy can be avoided in my cases.
We have to think twice for Mirena insertion because of high one time cost, but for long term Mirena is much cheaper with better patient compliance
Initial 2 month after insertion there were problem related to spotting and slight bleed ( may be because of large uterus and 18 mm thickness ) and she was kept on oral norethisterone support and now after about 60 days she feeling very well and dose of oral norethisterone is being decreased slowly.
